Our journey begins early in the morning as we depart from Cusco in our private transportation. Please be aware that the initial part of our adventure involves a lengthy drive to reach the trailhead. This 8-day expedition comprises 3 days of travel by car or bus, 4 1/2 days of invigorating hiking - including some challenging, full-day treks lasting 9-11 hours - and 1 day dedicated to exploring the remarkable site of Espiritu Pampa.
The Vilcabamba trek promises an abundance of Inca ruins and archaeological marvels, making it an ideal choice for enthusiasts of both nature and history. You'll experience the excitement of discovery as you arrive at the meticulously crafted stone steps leading to Espiritu Pampa, once the residence of Tupac Amaru I. If you're a connoisseur of Incan history in search of a unique, off-the-beaten-path adventure, this Vilcabamba trek is tailor-made for you!
For those seeking to extend their journey, consider completing the circuit by embarking on our 8-day Choquequirao to Vitcos hike.
It's important to note that this Vilcabamba trek does not include a visit to Machu Picchu. However, you can enhance your adventure by considering our Machu Picchu Extension!
Day 1. Cusco – Vilcabamba – Huarina
Good morning! Today, we will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco bright and early at 4 am to commence your Vilcabamba Trek to Espiritu Pampa. Following an approximate 8-hour drive in a private car, we will arrive at Vilcabamba. We plan to spend a few hours exploring Vilcabamba before setting up camp for the night.
Day 2. Vilcabamba - Huarina – Puncuyoc (Incahuasi) – Huarina
After savoring a delightful breakfast this morning, we'll embark on a local transportation journey to Huarina, which will take approximately 2 hours by road. Upon reaching Huarina, we will commence our hike up to Puncuyoc to explore the fascinating Incahuasi site, situated at an elevation of 4300 meters (14,107 feet). The hike will take us about 7 hours in total, and we'll return to Huarina by the end of the day. We'll once again set up our camp in Huarina for the night.
Day 3. Huarina – Capillayoc Lagoon
Today marks the most adventurous leg of the Vilcabamba Trek to Espiritu Pampa, where we'll embark on an approximately 9-hour hike along the mountain ridge, encountering stunning lakes along our path. Our campsite for the night will be at Capillayoc Lagoon.
Day 4. Capillayoc Lagoon - Qollpaqasa – Ututo
Today, it's crucial for us to ensure we are well-rested, as we have a challenging day of hiking ahead. We will be hiking for approximately 10 hours in total, starting from Capillayoc Lagoon and first making our way to Qollpaqasa (4 hours). From there, we will continue on to Ututo (4 hours), where we will set up camp for the night.
Day 5. Ututo - Vista Alegre
Our journey today will lead us through the Andean jungle, starting from Ututo and concluding at Vista Alegre. Along the way, we will traverse ancient Inca trails and have the exciting opportunity to spot the tunki bird, a relative of the renowned Peruvian 'gallito de las rocas.' Our overnight stay will be in Vista Alegre.
Day 6. Vista Alegre - Concevidayoc
Following breakfast, we'll embark on an 11-hour trek, descending from Vista Alegre to Concevidayoc. Along the way, we'll have the opportunity to admire various bird species and flora, including beautiful orchids. Our route will take us past Tunqui Mayo Bridge, the Andean community of Urpi Pata, and several other communities engaged in agriculture, livestock farming, and coffee cultivation.
Day 7. Concevidayoc - Espiritu Pampa – Kiteni
After three strenuous and demanding days of hiking, we finally get a well-deserved break! Starting from Concevidayoc, we'll embark on a relatively shorter 3-hour hike, leading us to Espiritu Pampa at an elevation of 1400 meters (4593 feet). Here, we'll have the opportunity to explore the captivating remains of the archaeological site of Espiritu Pampa, which served as the last Inca Capital. Most of the site remains cloaked in vegetation, adding to its mystique and intrigue. We will dedicate a significant portion of our day to exploring this fascinating location.
Following our exploration, we will begin our return journey by bus, a 5-hour ride that includes a stop in Kiteni, where we will spend the night in a comfortable hostel.
Day 8. Kiteni - Quillabamba – Cusco
Leaving Kiteni, we will board a bus bound for Quillabamba, approximately a 4-hour drive, with our departure scheduled for around 8 am. This marks the final stretch of our return journey. We anticipate reaching Cusco around 6 pm.
