Lares Trek to Machu Picchu: Unveil Andean Beauty
Embark on a 3-day adventure from Cusco to the famed Machu Picchu. Trek through diverse landscapes, gain 900 meters in elevation, and spend nights in local villages. Ascend to the Pachacutec Pass for breathtaking vistas. Explore Machu Picchu at sunrise and delve into its history. This journey fuses nature, culture, and ancient wonders.
Day 1: Cusco - Huaran - Cancha Cancha
Wake up early at 5:00 a.m. for your Lares to Machu Picchu trek. Pickup will be at the lobby of your hotel in Cusco, or slightly later if your hotel is in the Sacred Valley. Coordinate with the office for your pickup location and time. En route, we stop in Calca at a local market for any last-minute supplies. This market is a great place to buy fruits, nuts, chocolate, energy bars, or gifts for local children you'll interact with along the way. After our quick market stop, we head to the trailhead in Huaran.
Along the riverside, we meet up with our trekking team and settle in for the first of many delicious breakfasts prepared by our talented chef. While we settle in, the horsemen pack our canvas bags onto mules and horses, preparing for the journey ahead. You'll only carry your backpack with essential items for the day. Our hike begins in fairly warm weather, which gradually becomes colder as we gain altitude and approach the camp. The initial section of the trail is steep, so maintain your pace; it will eventually level out and become a more gradual climb.
Accompanying us along the way is the Pachachaca River flowing gently downstream, surrounded by a profusion of unique flora bordering the imposing mountains that flank us. Pick your guide's brain; they are well-versed in Andean culture and enjoy sharing their knowledge. On Day 1, we gain over 900 m/2953 ft in elevation. We stop along the way for a buffet-style lunch, prepared with a delightful blend of local and international ingredients. The rest of the journey leading to the agricultural community of Cancha Cancha boasts absolutely stunning scenery.
Upon arrival, our trekking team welcomes us with a selection of snacks and hot tea. Later, we spend time in this remote Quechua-speaking village, playing with children or simply strolling and savoring the beauty that nature offers. Your guide will be more than happy to translate and teach you some phrases in Quechua if you wish to communicate with the locals. Later, we head to our tent to enjoy a delicious and hearty 5-course dinner. To end the night, we settle in to spend the night admiring the star-filled night skies. Learn from our guide about the intricate farming methods of the locals and the ancient Incas, using constellations as guides.
Day 2: Cancha Cancha - Quishuarani - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes
We wake up to a steaming cup of tea served by your guide in your tent, along with a container of hot water for refreshment before breakfast. Before departing, take advantage of the last opportunity to use the clean and private toilets available in our camp. This is the most challenging yet rewarding day of the entire trek. Heading northeast for 4 hours, we embark on a steep ascent, zigzagging to reach the highest point of the hike, the Pachacutec Pass (4700 m / 15,420 ft). Once at the top, revel in the satisfaction of your achievement and the absolutely stunning views that will be your reward. This pass grants unparalleled panoramic views of the valley, dazzling turquoise glacial lakes, and two striking snow-covered mountain peaks.
After spending time at the summit, we continue with a brief descent to our lunch spot beside the glacial lake of Quiswarani. During lunch, we are surrounded by llamas and alpacas lazily grazing in the valley. This is the perfect opportunity to capture the standard llama or Peruvian alpaca vacation photo. Llama herders are easily recognizable by their colorful garments and are always eager to exchange greetings in their native language. Along the trail, we pass by the picturesque "Wall of Seven Waters," stopping for a few minutes to capture and admire a beautiful part of nature. Finally, we arrive in the small village of Kiswany for our 2-hour private transport to Ollantaytambo. Later, we board the train for a relaxing journey to Aguas Calientes, where we dine in a restaurant and spend the night in our carefully selected hotel.
Day 3: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
After an early breakfast at your hotel, we're ready to take an early bus at 5:30 a.m. to Machu Picchu, just in time to witness the sunrise. It's a truly mystical site steeped in history that you won't want to miss! After enjoying the sunrise, your guide will provide a 2-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu. We follow the circuit route on our ticket within the citadel.
After the tour, those who have pre-booked an additional hike to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain will have time to walk on their own. Once satisfied with the incredible views of Machu Picchu, a bus will be waiting to take you back to Aguas Calientes. Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes, lunch awaits you, with numerous restaurants to choose from (lunch not included). Depending on your train departure time, there may be some time for shopping or sightseeing.
The Expedition train will take you back to Ollantaytambo at 2:55 p.m. or 3:20 p.m., following the spectacular Urubamba River. Back in Ollantaytambo, your driver will meet you at the train station exit to take you back to your hotel in Cusco in our private van. Your estimated arrival in Cusco is at 7 pm.
NOTE: The tickets for the optional trekking options to Waynapicchu and Machu Picchu mountains are subject to availability and require advance reservations of at least 6-8 months. Please note that these tickets are not included in the services provided by Peru Qosqo Travel.
